The takedown and killing of Osama bin Laden gives us a moment to rejoice that such a rotten so-and-so got what he deserved. Certainly, a lot of praise is deserved by the Navy Seals, the intelligence community, and yes, even President Obama, who made the right calls in getting the job done.
However, the killing of one man has done very little to alter the fact that our other main problems are still staring us in the face: The threat of increased taxation, a crushing debt, heavy inflation, high unemployment, a weakening of our defense posture and deterioration of the rule of law.
The national leadership appears to be divided between people who want to do all the wrong things and people who appear to be unable to do anything about it. Therefore, the economic problems of this country will not go away. It is not certain what effect the death of Ben Laden will have on the War on Terror.
There are a lot of unanswered questions coming out of his death, including but not limited to the following questions:
What was Bin Laden’s continuing role going to be?
How soon will Americans realize the nature and seriousness of the threat posed by militant Islamic extremism?
How will Bin Laden’s death effect the moral and efforts of the terrorists? How much useful information did we get from Bin Laden’s hideout?
Will Bin Laden’s death encourage our side to take a more rational approach to thwarting terrorism such as the abandonment of some political correctness?
It is hoped that our military and intelligence communities will keep a tight rein on the critical and fragile methods and sources that helped make this last mission a success. In spite of the amount of work yet to be done and the problems that have to be solved, it feels mighty good to sit back and enjoy the great feeling that comes when a really bad guy gets what he deserves.
Congratulations go out to everyone who helped make the Bin Laden capture and kill a reality nearly 10 years after the devastation of 9/11.
