'May you live in interesting times'

“May you live in interesting times.” Often attributed as “an ancient Chinese curse,” these words are often used to refer to situations beyond your control. And we do indeed live in disturbing times.

Congress recently avoided its responsibility for the debt of the United States and our President is furious because they didn’t raise taxes. That’s about the only thing they did right with the screwy deal they cobbled together.

Obama’s answer to everything is to raise taxes, especially on “the rich.” This is class warfare and penalizes the very people generating tax dollars and jobs. America was founded as a land of opportunity where anyone, regardless of status, could excel through dint of hard work.

Warren Buffett expounded that “the rich” aren’t paying enough taxes. Former Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan said he should lead by example and write a $5 billion check to the government. I wonder how fast that’s going to happen.

John Merline of Investor’s Business Daily writes, “If the federal government's regulatory operation were a business, it would be one of the 50 biggest in the country in terms of revenues, and the third largest in terms of employees, with more people working for it than McDonald's, Ford, Disney and Boeing combined.” America didn’t achieve greatness via the government. The government uses our tax dollars to grow and interfere into every aspect of our lives.

Obama is touring the Midwest in a brand new shiny black bus (which some have called a morgue on wheels) telling everyone that “he reversed the recession until bad luck hit.” Well, the bad luck began in January 2009 and has not abated for a nanosecond since.

He can’t tout any of the “stimulus” plans as being successful; even his strongest supporters have stopped counting the jobs they produced because it’s too embarrassing.

His green jobs panacea, Evergreen Solar, has tanked and is filing for bankruptcy. The company is in debt to the tune of $435 million+ and its employees are now jobless. This is a company that got the stimulus money AND a handout from the state of Massachusetts. According to Obama’s backwards theories, Evergreen should have spent more money and asked for higher taxes.

Recently, Obama lectured Government Motors. “You can’t just make money on SUVs and trucks,” Obama said during a town hall forum in Cannon Falls, Minn. “There is a place for SUVs and trucks, but as gas prices keep on going up, you have got to understand the market. People are going to try to save money.”

We’re not saving money at the gas pump, at the grocery store, or anywhere else in America. And Obama wants to raise our taxes.

There’s another ancient curse that is apropos to our current national quandary. “Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.”

I think we live in insane times and our President has missed the “teachable moments” available through the study of history and Economics 101.
