NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- I want to offer something that is rare in these contentious times: praise for and thanks to those who serve the public and community. This particular message of thanks is not directed to our first responders. They get lots of well-deserved praise.
I want to acknowledge the legions of elected and volunteer officials who make great sacrifices to serve their communities but rarely receive positive recognition. Residents of Volusia County have been deluged over the last year with negative stories about the actions of local governments and appointed public boards. Violations of Sunshine and Public Record laws, misuse of public funds, disgraced individual employees, and questionable appointments and hiring have been alleged – sometimes proven -- and filled the media and the conversation.
To many citizens who read and hear about these issues, it’s a validation of “they are all rotten, so throw the bums out.” I humbly disagree with such a blanket indictment. The vast majority of those who serve in local elected office or accept appointments to boards charged with the public’s business are selfless, responsible and committed to community. While it is true that some individuals enter the public realm with the intention of profiting, most simply want to help move the community in a positive direction. Those who stand for elected office or accept volunteer appointment generally understand that their time with family, employment and recreation will suffer, and, in many instances, earning capacity will be diminished.
It is hurtful and discouraging to accept the responsibility of representing and acting on behalf of the public while making huge sacrifices in one’s personal and business life only to get “rewarded” with a damaged reputation, accused of bad intentions or incompetence. Can mistakes be made – foolishly, innocently or intentionally? Of course! Should we sweepingly impugn the integrity or ability of all who serve when a few make mistakes?
Not a good idea.
When does the well run dry of talented, community-minded local citizens willing to tote the load?
Here is a suggestion: Take a closer look at those who have chosen or been persuaded to serve and perhaps gain some understanding of the responsibilities they shoulder and sacrifices they make. It is amazing how much one learns from a concentrated and open-minded examination.
If you look closely and still don’t like what you see, jump in yourself and take up the cause.
This is America: Our Republic; our representative Democracy; our government of, by and for the people. Our citizens make us great when they put service over self and employ their talents, strengths and intellect on behalf of all. Why not you?
