DELTONA -- Veteran politician Phil Giorno has reason to smile these days. After all, he's qualified by petition to run for the district 5 seat on the Volusia County Council held by term-limited incumbent Patricia Northey representing Deltona, DeBary and Enterprise.
"Well, it's official," Giorno wrote on his Facebook page. "I've qualified by petition for the Volusia County Council District 5 election. And I'm the only VETERAN in the race. We collected almost 900 petitions in the 47 days since I filed as a candidate. Thanks so much to everyone who helped. I'm taking a deep breath and getting ready to come out fighting. Please contact me if you're willing to lend a hand."

Andy Ferrari of Deltona withdrew earlier this month.
>Northey, meanwhile, in her 20th year on thecouncil is challenging at-large County Councilwoman Joyce Cusack, who is seeking her second and final four-year term on the seat as she'll be term-limited, if she wins.
Also running are first-term Deltona City Commissioner Webster Barnaby and term-limited Holly Hill Mayor Roy Johnson, Jr.
