SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. -- "Appearances can be deceptive." So goes the one-liner in the comedy spoof on espionage in the 2008 movie, "Burn After Reading. Such a one-liner could apply to local resident Phillip Moore, who rides a biycle like the dim-witted Brad Pitt character, Chad Feldheimer.
And while the 30-year-old Moore allegedly took a hatchet to an ATM machine, which is kind of dumb considering his image was caught on the surveillance camera, at least he didn't get himself killed like Pitt's character in the movie that also starred John Malkovich as Osbourne Cox, Frances McDormand as Linda Litzke and George Clooney as Harry Pfarrer in the Coen Brothers movie.
Still, Moore got himself thrown in jail on charges of criminal mischief and burglary to a structure, after he paid a Sept. 21 visit to an ATM machine at the SunTrust, 2580 S. Ridgewood Ave., police said.
Photos for Headline Surfer® / Here is a synopsis of what occurred as described by South Daytona cops at 1 a.m. that Sunday: Phillip Moore walked up to the ATM at the SunTrust and took three whacks to it with a hatchet in one hand while standing in front of the electronic device with a personal check in the other before before the surveillance camera went blank.
When cops reviewed the surveillance video, they immediately recognized him as a local and later spotted him riding his bicycle on Big Tree Road, leading to his apprehension without incident. No word on whether the bicycle Moore was riding was a Schwinn like Chad Feldheimer's in the "Burn After Reading" movie.
Moore's alleged hatchet attack on an ATM machine comes in at No. 77 in the HeadlineSurfer.com countdown of the top 100 local stories of 2014.
