DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Who doesn't love a good animal story? Especially one that has a happy ending...

That happened earlier today when a lost dog held overnight was reunited with its owner, thanks to Officer Taylor Preis with the Daytona Beach Police Department’s Animal Control Unit, who found the owner through the Petco Love Lost.

The owner and dog greeted each other with a kiss in the DBPD animal control vehicle. She then scooped him up in her arms and told him, "Mommy loves you." Then, after thanking Preis, they went home.

Petco's Love Lost explainer

Petco Love Lost is a free, national lost and found pet database created by Petco Love to help reunite lost and found pets with their owners. It uses facial recognition technology to match photos of lost pets with those in the database, which includes pets reported by individuals and those in partner shelters.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

How it works: Centralized Database: Petco Love Lost acts as a single, centralized platform where pet owners and finders can report lost and found pets.

Facial Recognition Technology: The database utilizes patented facial recognition technology to quickly scan and match uploaded photos of pets with those in the database.

Community Engagement: It's not just for shelters; anyone can use it to report a lost or found pet, fostering community involvement in reuniting pets.

Alerts and Notifications: The system sends users alerts when a potential match is found, helping to facilitate quick reunions.

Free and Accessible: The service is free for all users, including pet owners, finders, and shelters.

Key features: Searchable Database: Allows users to actively search for their lost pets or browse found pets.

Photo Upload: Users can easily upload photos of their pets to the database.

Sharing Capabilities: Users can share lost pet listings on social media platforms to broaden the reach.

Integration with Shelters: Many shelters utilize Petco Love Lost, making it a primary tool for finding lost pets in shelters.

Retroactive Search: The technology can be used to search through existing records of lost and found pets, potentially reuniting pets that went missing previously.
