NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The New Smyrna Beach Police Department is investigating a train-versus-pedestrian crash involving a 16-year-old female victim that occurred at approximately 11:48 a.m. Wednesday near the railroad tracks at Eleanor Avenue.
The pedestrian, a 16-year-old girl, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to an Orlando medical facility for treatment. Police did not release information on the circumstances that led to the incident.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the incident appears to be accidental, New Smyna Beach police said, adding the investigation remains active.
The railroad crossings at Eleanor Avenue and Wayne Avenue have reopened.
"Our thoughts are with the victim, her family, and all those affected by this incident," NSBPD said in a prepared statement.
