DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- John Cooper, the first man to serve as president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and later Daytona International Speedway who died Wednesday in Indianapolis at the age of 83, was remembered by motorsports leaders of today.

New Smyrna Beach Fire Dept. contains 5-acre brush fire near Sugar Mill

Photo for Headline Surfer / A New Smyrna Beach Fire Deparment unit puts out hot spots from a 5-acre brush fire Friday in the 3000 block of Pioneer Trail. No homes from the nearby Sugar Mill gated community were impacted by the fire, but nearby residents can expect to see and smell lingering spoke through the weekend, NSBFD officials said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- A 5-acre brush fire near the Sugar Mill Country Club gated community was contained Friday by the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department.
 
The fire was found in a wooded area around the 3000 block of Pioneer Trail. 
 

DeLand library hosts talk: Living with alligators

DELAND, Fla. -- A representative from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission will
explain the "do’s and don’ts of living with alligators" at 11 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 19, at the DeLand Regional Library.
Attendees can pick up some safety tips and learn what to do and who to call about nuisance alligators. Reservations are not required for this free program.
