NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 15-year-old Oak Hill teen has been arrested on charges of aggravated battery after cutting his mother with a razor blade, which required her to receive several stitches, police said.
The 38-year-old mother, was treated after the Sunday night incident at Bert Fish Medical Center for cuts to her back and a finger.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Resort tax collections in March declined 7.1 percent over the same period last year in greater New Smyrna Beach, even with Bike Week, though the downward trend was less severe than in Daytona Beach and other areas of Volusia County.

DELAND -- Florida has five confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1) in the following counties: two in Lee, one in Broward, one in Orange , and one in Pinellas, according to Volusia County health officials.
Alachua, Lee, Indian River, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Seminole, and Clay have one probable case each. Miami Dade and Broward each has three. Hillsborough County has six probable cases.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The free Observer Light newspaper is history with efforts being made to generate more paid subscriptions for the regular weekly Observer newspaper, said its publisher, Michelle Lott.
The Observer ceased its "Light" newspaper midway through April with an emphasis on getting more readers to pay $20 annually for a subscription-based paper, Lott said.
Lott and her husband, Robert Lott, bought the Observer last fall after it was closed down by its then-owner, Indiana-based Horizon Publications nearly a year ago.
EDGEWATER -- The regular first Monday City Council meeting of the month scheduled for tonight has been called off, according to the city's Web site.
"Due to lack of agenda items the May 4, 2009 City Council meeting has been CANCELLED," the public notice stated..
The next meeting will be held 6 p.m. Monday, May 18, in Council Chambers, 102 N. Riverside Drive. An agenda will be posted prior to the meeting, according to the Web site.
ORANGE CITY -- The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has detained two suspects in an attack near Orange City early this morning.
Deputies are still investigating in an effort to determine what prompted the confrontation resulting in the beating of 28-year-old Aaron Wells, who was
airlifted by Sheriff’s Office helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with what originally were thought to be stab wounds.
However, doctors at the hospital found no sign of stab wounds. The victim, though, was beaten by his attackers and was treated and then released from the hospital.
ORMOND BEACH -- A 56-year-old man was killed earlier tonight after being struck by a freight train in Ormond Beach, possibly the result of a suicide, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating the possibility that the death was a suicide, agency spokesman Gary Davidson said. The victim's name isn't being released until family members are notified of the death.
ORMOND BEACH -- The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a scam alert to the public after a 74-year-old Ormond Beach woman nearly got conned earlier this week out of close to $7,000, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said.
At least four similar fraud attempts have been reported this week in East Volusia, and officials want to get the word out about the scam to prevent residents from becoming victims. No money was taken in the four incidents from this week.
