Daytona Beach cops: Man gunned down early this morning in motel room

DAYTONA BEACH -- Gunshot blasts woke up guests inside the Sunshine Inn, a rundown motel on South Ridgewood and when cops got there, they found a black man in his early 40s dead in a pool of blood inside one of the rooms. Police received at least one 9-1-1 at 5:48 a.m. about shots being fired, but very little other than the frightened caller saying he heard the gunfire.

PORT ORANGE -- The cops have issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for two men who robbed the Kohl’s Department Store while armed with a handgun Saturday night.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Cops are continuing their search this early Monday morning for the driver of a small red convertible car who they say deliberately struck and killed a man over the weekend in the rear parking lot of 444 Seavreeze Boulevard.

Police were vague in a brief press release with few details as to what happened. But this is as best what Headline Surfer could surmise from the release: A small red convertible car and a black Range Rover were at the light at Seabreeze and Oleander early Sunday heading westbound when words were exchanged between the driver of the red car and two pedestrians. The driver of the red car got out and a fight broke out.

Murder locale in Deltona / Headline SurferDELTONA -- An apparent drug deal in Deltona went horribly wrong late Sunday afternoon, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old man who was dragged down the street by a fleeing motorist, an official with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim was identified as Tristan De Joy, who witnesses reported walking late Sunday afternoon to the end of Sonnet Court, the same Deltona road where he lives. Next, a pickup truck was spotted driving to the end of the street, where De Joy was.

ORMOND BEACH -- A former accountant who bragged of spending $7,000 of the thousands of dollars she alledgedly pilfered from her employer while working as an accountant, has been arrested on theft charges after being taken into custody in North Carolina, a Volusia County Sheriff's official said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A lone man robbed the Friends Bank branch leading to a 9-1-1 call at 11:45 a.m. today, New Smyrna Beach police said, adding he had already run off when they arrived.

Police said the was given an undisclosed amount of money, but they did not say whether he displayed a weapon or implied he had one on him. They also didn't say whether he handed a teller a note or just asked for money.

Physical evidence was collected at the scene, police said, without explaining what that meant.

Deputies tipped off to burglaries in Deltona by thieves pushing shopping carts

DELTONA -- It was shortly after 4 in the morning morning when a resident spotted a suspicious sight -- two people walking down the street, pushing a shopping cart loaded with various items.

DAYTONA BEACH -- A man killed by a train on the tracks of the Florida East Coast Railway on Monday night at the crossing near International Speedway Boulevard has been identified as 49-year-old Carl Labreck, authorities confirmed.

His body was found 75 feet from where he was struck just before 8:30 p.m. A train dispatcher called the crash in to authorities.

Investigators with the FEC and local police are trying to figure out he was standing on the tracks in the first place. The city had an epidemic of suicides by train a decade ago where several men stood in the path of oncoming trains, even with lights and sirens by the conuctors.

Deltona man wanted in connection with armed home invasion near DeLand apprehended; 5 others arrested earlier

DELAND -- Sheriff's deputies apprehended a sixth and final suspect wanted in connection with a Feb. 25 armed home invasion outside the DeLand city limits.

"Volusia County Sheriff's deputies located 19-year-old Scott Barkley at his Deltona home (Tuesday) morning and arrested him without incident," Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.
