Observer newspaper Editor Robert Burns wrote in his weekly column this week about an incident that occurred on the roof of his office that landed a New Smyrna Beach man in the hospital in critical condition. See the story already posted on our Web site regarding the circumstances that led to 32-year-old Adrian Fair, falling off the roof Tuesday night and having to be airlifted with critical head injuries while playing on the roof with a skateboard. Coutesy photo/Sheriff's Office. Adrian Fair, 32, of New Smyrna Beach is reported in critical condition, after falling from the roof of the Canal Street building that houses the Observer newspaper with the intent of skateboarding on it. He was airlifted last night to Halifax Medical Center. 

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The “Your Library/Your Lifeline” series continues at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library with a free retirement planning workshop.

Financial adviser Jamie Calkins, who specializes in developing strategies to meet financial goals, will present the workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 25.

The series will continue in July with a display on estate planning.

Nancy Jo Wood, 72, of New Smyrna Beach, who co-owned Beachside Photo in New Smyrna Beach with her late husband was a member of Coronado Community United Methodist Church and former member of Smyrna Yacht Club, died Friday, June 12.

Kathy May Flynn, 60, of Edgewater, who enjoyed collecting coins and was active in the VFW and American Legion Post 285 in Edgewater, died Thursday, June 11, 2009.

SAMSULA -- A motorist was shot in the stomach Saturday afternoon on State Road 44 during an apparent case of road rage, with the alleged gunman claiming he had been cut off, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said.

The victim, Jeremy Wiener, no address given, underwent surgery at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and was reported in stable condition later in the day. William Alvarado, 48, of Altamonte Springs, the alleged gunman, was admitted to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City for observation after complaining of chest pains. The Sheriff's Office is charging him with attempted murder, aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

The Halifax Sport Fishing Club held its annual ladies tournament – Bruce Tippins put his wife, Connie on the first-place dolphin, which weighed 26.7 pounds. Angela King got first place Wahoo overall winner, and Susan Cloer landed the largest kingfish.

The junior angler award went to Kaitlyn Bumpass. With the good weather recently, the dolphin bite offshore remained quite hot with many fish weighing up to 40 pounds being brought to the dock.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A man installing insulation in an attic that caught fire suffered serious burns this afternoon and had to be airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center, an official with the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department said.

The victim suffered burns over at least 30 percent of his body and was in critical condition in the hospital's burn unit after the Volusia Sheriff's helicopter flight from the scene at 699 Fairway Drive, said Randy Wright, fire department division chief. Wright did not have the victim's name, but said he was approximately 40 years old.
