NSB Regional Shopping Center targeted by carjackers, purse snatchers, and now, panhandlers.

This man, who refused to identify himself, except to say he's a homeless Vietnam Veteran from New Jersey, stood Wednesday afternoon for more than an hour at an entranceway  to the NSB Regional Shopping Center on State Road 44, trying to solicit money from motorists exiting eastbound. He got no money. The shopping center in recent months has been targeted by carjackers and purse snatchers and now panhandlers.

Volusia County to meet with firefighters union June 11

DELAND -- Staff from the Volusia County Personnel Division will meet with representatives of the International Association of Firefighters union, which represents county firefighters, from 9 a.m. - noon Thursday, June 11, to discuss contract
negotiations.

The meeting will be in the second-floor conference room of the Volusia County Personnel Division, 230 N. Woodland Blvd., Suite 262, DeLand.

Flood disaster funds available through Volusia County

DELAND -- Flood victims in Volusia County can apply for state funding assistance through Volusia County and the cities of Daytona Beach and Port Orange, said county spokeswoman Shelley Szafraniec

Flood victims living outside Daytona Beach city limits may apply for disaster assistance through Volusia County’s Community Assistance
Division, which has received $1 million in state funds to assist families affected by the May flooding.

Aerial mosquito spraying to begin Sunday night for NSB, Edgewater and Oak Hill

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Volusia County’s Mosquito Control Division has contracted with Clarke Mosquito Control to spray 113,569 acres in the county starting Sunday night here in New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill, said Vickie Pleus, a county spokeswoman.

She said Clarke will treat for adult mosquitoes using low-flying fixed-wing aircraft. The spraying will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. and is expected to be completed by Thursday night.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 45-year-old woman was struck and killed by a motorist in a Toyota pick-up truck Friday night while crossing the 1900 block of State Road 44, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Couch potato report: Magic lose game 2 in OT; 101-96

The Orlando Magic lost game 2 in overtime to the Los Angeles Lakers. 101-96. Shooting guard Courtney Lee missed a tough lay-up with .6 of second left in regulation that would have given the Magic the win. Instead, the Lakers built up a lead in OT. The Magic now return home where they must win 2 out of 3 to stave off elimination at Amway Arena.

Mrs. Frederick and I watched the game with great anticipation, pleased at least that the Magic made a game of it.

In frustration, Mrs. Frederick, said of the overtime loss: "They're done. Over. Finished."

Sheriff Office: Deltona man and toddler son carjacked, but unharmed; three later arrested in Sanford

THREE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING CARJACKING IN DELTONA

DELTONA -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office has three people in custody after 38-year-old Moliek Hudson was carjacked Monday afternoon at gunpoint in Deltona with his 3-year-old son inside his van, agency spokesman Gary Davidson said.

The suspects put the toddler out of the vehicle at Florida Drive in the southwest corner of Deltona before taking off with Hudson's van and wallet. However, the culprits -- two males and a female -- didn't get very far, Davidson said.
