NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The discovery of a fatal gunshot victim early this morning slumped in an SUV behind an Edgewater bar is believed to be from an earlier incident in which shots were reported fired in the 1400-1600 blocks of Palmetto Street, New Smyrna Beach police said.
It's doubtful many people in New Smyrna Beach are aware of the work of the Children’s Advocacy Center or CAC. This is a group in Volusia County that works with the police and State Attorney’s Office performing a function very similar to the special victims unit seen on the TV show “Law and Order - SVU.”

I recently watched the documentary “Safe Haven, The Warsaw Zoo,” produced by New Smyrna Beach High School teacher Richard Lester with his son Gary (as director) and Edgewater resident Charlie Carlson. Though the focus here at NSBNEWS.net is on greater New Smyrna Beach and its daily news cycle, even as we have a homicide of our own involving a 25-year-old man shot to death, I can't stop thinking about the 13-year-old Daytona Beach boy shot in the face and killed -- just like that -- when he answered the door to murderers seemingly intent on killing his father.
