Grand jury returns 1st-degree murder indictment in Daytona Beach slaying

DAYTONA BEACH -- A Volusia County grand jury handed up an Indictment Monday upgrading charges against DAngelo Belle to first-degree murder in the March 12, 2009, death of Chad Hankerson, the State Attorney's office said.

Hankerson, 20, was killed in an apartment building parking lot on Maple Street. If convicted, Belle could get life in prison.

Edgewater Library to host 'New Moon' event Nov. 19

EDGEWATER -- Teenagers are invited to celebrate their excitement for everything “New Moon” from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Edgewater Public Library.

“New Moon” is the second novel in Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” series, which has teens around the world hooked on reading. The movie will be released in theaters Nov. 20.

The library staff will offer games, crafts, prizes and snacks relating to “New Moon.” Fans can bring a camera and have their picture taken with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of character Edward Cullen.

Sera and I worked for two days straight putting together the video series on the third and final candidates debate. In all there are seven videos from Monday night's event at the Brannon Center that drew more than a hundred people to see zone 1 commission challenger Judy Reiker and incumbent Randy Richenberg square off and mayoral challenger Adam Barringer and Sally Mackay go toe to toe.

Sheriff's Office: Meth labs in NSB, Port Orange smashed; seven arrested

Francesco Vezza, 53, of New Smyrna Beach, and Angel Somma, 28, of Edgewater, were among seven people arrested Thursday on drug charges in connection with law enforcement raids on meth labs in Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- One of the largest methamphetamine labs ever found in Volusia County was raided Thursday morning in Port Orange and a second meth lab in New Smyrna Beach was hit as well, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

Pedestrian killed in Orange City identified

ORANGE CITY -- A pedestrian struck and killed Wednesday night while trying to cross South Volusia Avenue in front of the Heritage Inn has been identified as Kenneth Robertson, 45, of Orange City, police there said.

No charges were filed against the driver a pick-up truck in the 7:15 p.m. fatality, Nicholas Pojero, 51, of Deltona,because the pedestrian darted in front of him and he could not stop in time, police said.

Robertson was was flown by Sheriff's helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he died shortly after 8 p.m., police said.

Elderly DeLon Springs man tied up by armed robbers in his home, safe taken

DELEON SPRINGS -- A 75-year-old man was assaulted in his DeLeon Springs home early today by two men, one of whom had a gun, who tied him up and took off with his safe, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

The 11:20 a.m. armed robbery occurred at 5060 Central Avenue, when two men barged in through the back door and held the victim at gunpoint while they tied him up. Sheriff's officials did not release the victim's name.

Students and teachers in Northwest Volusia to receive H1N1 vaccination Saturday

PIERSON -- The Volusia County Health Department is offering an H1N1 swine flu vaccination clinic intended only for students, teachers, and school staff in northwest Volusia County -- Pierson, Barberville, Seville, DeLeon Springs -- on Saturday.
