Wind chill advisory in effect locally with overnight temps expected to fall below freezing to 20s

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a wind-chill advisory until 9 a.m. Monday, with overnight temperatures expected to fall below freezing and into the 20s for Volusia County.

DeLand Rotary food drive a success

DELAND -- December was a good month for the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia and the Rotary
Club of DeLand.

The DeLand noon-time club had a goal to collect 500 pounds of food for the Neighborhood Center.

Food Drive Chairman Maureen France said she was pleased that the club "exceeded its goal" by collecting 515 pounds of food for the needs of the people of DeLand."

Rotarians France, Howard Fisher and club president Dave Brannon delivered the food to Neighborhood Center Senior Coordinator Chris Brassard on Saturday.

Children can make peace postcards at NSB library on Jan. 16

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Children ages 6 - 11 can create peace postcards at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library from 1 - 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.

Pam Coffman, curator of the Museum of Florida Art, will lead the free session and encourage children to use their own words and images. Selected postcards will be displayed in the museum’s "Picturing
Peace: A Community Vision" display from March 12-28.

The activity introduces topics of war and peace to students and draws connections to the museum’s featured exhibit, “Paradoxes Portrayed: Drawings and Assemblages by Ummarid Eitharong.”

Carol Hargy returns to NSB City Hall

NSBNEWS.net photo by Henry Frederick. Carol Hargy, director of personnel for the City of New Smyrna Beach, returned to her job two days after resigning effective Dec. 16, for private enterprise in Jacksonville.

GRADE: A

Carol Hargy's change of heart about leaving New Smyrna Beach is a plus for city government because of her experience, expertise and approach to the mission of proper governance and adherence to personnel issues at City Hall. 

Hargy resigned early last month, with her final day Dec. 16. She was intending to return to the private sector in Jacksonville, which would have required her to move to St. Augustine as a halfway point between friends and relatives here and the extended commute.

$100K damage to boat manufacturer

Courtesy photo. A fire Sunday night at Everglades Boats in Edgewater was extinguished by nearly 50 firefighters from Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange and command staff from Ponce Inlet and South Daytona, but not before it caused $100,000 in damage.

EDGEWATER -- A fire of undetermined case at a boat manufacturing facility Sunday night caused $100,000 in damages, said a spokeswoman for Edgewater Fire Services.
