Former MLB catcher Benjie Molina to attend Friday chamber ribbon cutting for Molina Impact Training

PORT ORANGE -- The Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Port Orange Chamber will co-host a 2 p.m. Friday ribbon cutting for Molina Impact Training.

This new business, a direct result of the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce Brawl at the Beach Softball Tournament, has hired three employees to run an 8,000 square foot training facility. Initially for baseball, the facility will also offer individualized instruction, and eventually softball and other sports. At the very least, Former San Francisco Giant and Texas Ranger Bengie Molina will be present for autographs and interviews.

Jamil Khader of Stetson University will speak on 'Islam in America' at United Church of Christ in New Smyrna Beach

Stetson University Professor Jamil Khader / Headline SurferPhoto for Headline Surfer / Jamil Khader of Stetson University will be the featured speaker Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. as the United Church of Christ in New Smyrna Beach concludes its Community Forum Series for 2012-2013.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Jamil Khader will speak on the "Profile of Islam in America," touching on such subjects such as the view of Jesus in Islam, mistrust of Islam in Western nations, and possible avenues to dialogue between Christians and Muslims. Admission is free.

The 90-minute event will be held in the Community Hall of the United Church of Christ. An audience question and answer period will follow his talk.  Khader teaches in the English Department at Stetson and chairs the Gender Studies Program. A Palestinian Arab from Israel, Khader completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English Literature at Haifa University, Israel, and his doctorate on a Fulbright scholarship at Penn State University.

The Stetson professor said that in his youth he was always fascinated by the Quran’s telling of the story of Jesus, or Issa as he is referred to in Arabic. He calls it his “favorite story,” describing it as “full of poetry, wonder, and magic.” Given the elevated place Jesus occupies in Islam, Khader said he came to the US expecting a reverence he did not find toward his own faith, and the Prophet Mohammad.

71. Deputy shoots and kills DeLeon Springs man after rifle pointed at him while trying to serve warrant

DELEON SPRINGS -- A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy who was part of a team serving a search warrant early this morning, shot and killed a man on June 29, who armed himself with a rifle and refused orders to put down the weapon.

The shooting occurred at 5:44 a.m., inside a home on State Road 11 in DeLeon Springs. It comes in at No. 71 in Headline Surfer's countdown of the top 100 local stories of 2012.

As a side note, his wife, Mindy France Bennett, was 'Miss NSB HS 1997.'

69. Feds: NSB man gets 12 years in prison for kiddie porn

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Fredrick Bardell, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard, is now serving time in prison for downloading and hoarding 16,500 photos and more than 400 movies involving pre-adolescent children, the US Attorney's Office said.

The 45-year-old New Smyrna Beach man had been collecting the kiddie porn for two decades and even shared the content with others online.

Judge Roy Dalton, Jr. sentenced Bardell in June to a dozen years in prison, followed by 20 years of sexual offender probation. Bardell's sentencing comes in at No. 69 in Headline Surfer's countdown of the top 100 local stories of 2012.

68. Alleged New Smyrna Beach serial arsonist nabbed by Volusia County Sheriff's investigators

James BatesNEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Alleged serial arsonist James Bates admitted to setting fires as far back as the 1970s, but said he managed to suppress the urge for some time, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office in announcing his arrest in March.

That all ended back in December 2011, when Sheriff's investigators said Bates returned to old habits. In a span of less than seven weeks starting in early December, five fires were intentionally set in the New Smyrna Beach area. Bates' arrest comes in at No. 68 in Headline Surfer's countdown of the top 100 local stories of 2012. 

67. Murderous rampage: Port Orange man kills own son and a camper at RV park in Deerfield Beach before killing himself

William DeJesus, 41, of 509 Newton Road, Port Orange drove his family down to Broward County in his red Ford Mustang in February, where he shot and killed an elderly Candian tourist he didn't know before he holed up in the victim's RV and tried to wipe out his whole family by stabbing his wife and two sons, killing one of them and himself in the process.

PORT ORANGE -- The "why" is not always defined when it comes to a murderous rampage. Such is the case of a Port Orange man who shot and killed a Canadian tourist at an RV Park in Deerfield Beach on Feb. 9, then stabbed his own autistic son to death, tried to do the same to his wife and younger son before killing himself with a knife.

66. Circuit judge: Death sentence stands for Deltona Xbox mass murderer

DAYTONA BEACH -- Mass murderer Jerone Hunter is not getting off Florida's death row anytime soon, if ever, after a circuit judge's Jan. 25 ruling that he failed to prove ineffective assistance of counsel at his capital murder trial six years ago.

The judge's ruling comes in at No. 66 in the countdown of Headline Surfer's top 100 local stories of 2012.

65. VCSO: Man murdered in Osteen may be linked to drug growing operation

OSTEEN -- A body found in a wooded area of Osteen in April was later identified as 34-year-old Lester Bermudez-Garcia, who was murdered, the Volusia County Sheriff's office confirmed May 2.

The slaying comes in at No. 65 in Headline Surfer's countdown of the top 100 local stories of 2012.

Municipal powerbrokers in DeLand for CRA workshop

DELAND -- The power brokers are here from several municipalities in the Volusia County Council chambers either because they want a CRA or because they want to continue receiving the millions in taxpayer dollars supposedly for "blighted areas."

I'll go out on a limb to predict none of these power brokers will mention the millions currently being spent on street parties where alcohol is the main draw.

Nowhere is that use more pronounced than on Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach and on Main Street in Daytona Beach -- both lined with bars.
