High tides delay vehicular traffic on beach for Labor Day crowds
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Labor Day did not get off to a good start for most sunbathers hoping to catch some early rays.
That's because all of Volusia County's beach ramps, including those in New Smyrna Beach, were not opened until 12:30 p.m. at the earliest because of high tides.
And that meant no motor vehicles on the beach.
Many of the ramps, including the Flagler Avenue Approach had long lines of vehicles waiting to get onto the "world's most famous beach."

Mayor Sally Mackay is upset that challenger Adam Barringer does not have the word 'for' on his political campaign ads since he is not an incumbent as required by Florida statutes. He said it was an oversight and fellow challenger Marilee Walters said there are bigger issues in the campaign to focus on than semantics. .jpg)

Frederick. The New Smyrna Beach 'Cudas opened the 2009-'10 football season at home Friday night with a 33-7 romping of the Pine Ridge Panthers of Deltona. At left, Stephen Jackson scores his second touchdown run of the game. In the middle, the 'Cudas offense dominated much of the game, especially in the second half, thanks to a strong offensive line and ball control by quarterback A.J. Granger (top right) to his running backs, Jackson, who had three TD runs and Raheem Mostert (No. 31), who had two TD runs, including a 95-yarder by Mostert.
