NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Today is the final day to register to vote in the Sept. 22 primary races for mayor and two city commission seats, according to the Volusia County Board of Elections.

City residents who are not registered may do so by going to the Department of Motor Vehicles (in the K-mart plaza on State Road 44), the New Smyrna Beach Public Library (1001 S. Dixie Freeway) or at the Volusia County Board of Elections Office in DeLand (125 W. New York Ave., DeLand). For more information on registering for the primary, please call the Supervisor of Elections at (386) 736-5930.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Dozens of volunteers showed up this sunny Saturday morning and into the early afternoon to pick up their share of lawn signs, buttons and placards for the re-election campaign of first-term Mayor Sally Mackay, who opened up her headquarters on Canal Street at the former bureau offices of the Daytona Beach News-Journal/Pennysaver.

Beach Patrol: Man drowns in rolling NSB surf

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 54-year-old man died after washing ashore unconscious this afternoon between Flounder and Drum avenues, the Volusia County Beach Patrol said.

The swimmer, whose indentity was not released because relatives had not yet been contacted was given CPR by lifeguards who spotted him on the beach just after 3 p.m. He was rushed by EVAC ambulance to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach where he was pronounced dead, said Capt. Scott Petersohn, spokesman for the Beach Patrol.

Wooden boat breaks into thousands of pieces after drifting into South Jetty in NSB

Volunteers pick up the beached wreckage of a 46-foot trimaran that broke loose from its mooring in Ponce Inlet overnight, struck the South Jetty and literally shattered into thousands of pieces, before washing ashore along a half-mile stretch of the New Smyrna Beach coastline, just noth of the Beachway ramp.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- It took the better part of the day to clean up a half-mile stretch of coastline from the Beachway approach and north of thousands of wooden pieces from a 46-foot-long boat that broke apart overnight while moored in Ponce Inlet.

The 1965 trimaran with a wooden hull came undone from the mooring and apparently drifted, apparently crashing into the boulders of the South Jetty and breaking up.
