NBA preseason: Miami Heat too much for visiting Orlando Magic; Dwight Howard nets 5 points

Dwight HowardIf the preseason opener for the Orlando Magic on the road against the Miami Heat is a harbinger of things to come in the NBA regular season, it might not matter if Dwight Howard stays. LeBron, D-Wade and company crushed the Magic, 118-85 on Sunday.

Howard only scored 5 points on 2 for 9 shooting, though he had three blocked shots. Lebron James led the Heat with 19 points in what turned out to be a second half rout.

NBA preseason: Vince Carter scores 9 in Mavs loss to Oklahoma City Thunder

Vince Carter made his preseason debut for the Dallas Mavericks, shooting 4 for 11 for 9 points, as the Mavs lost on the road to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 106 to 92 Sunday, in preseason action. The Dallas Mavericks open the 2011-'12 NBA regular season at home Christmas Day against the Miami Heat, the team they beat in the finals to win the NBA championship last season.

Flagler County deputies: Boy, 3, killed after being struck in the head by tree cut down by older brother in grandfather's yard

BUNNELL -- A 3-year-old boy was killed after being struck in the head by a tree cut by his 12-year-old brother mid-morning Friday, Flagler County deputies said.

The toddler, Joseph Demillo, was in his grandfather's yard on County Road 304 in western Flagler County when his older brother was cutting down a dead tree that was 6-inches thick. The little boy apparently wandered into the path of the falling tree and was struck in the head by a branch, deputies said of the 9:55 a.m. accident.

The boy was rushed by his grandfather to the intersection of County Road 304 and U.S. 1 where a Flagler County ambulance picked him up and transported him to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Dallas Mavericks have good reason to be pleased with the addition of Vince Carter as the NBA season begins Christmas Day. Carter, the Mainland High School McDonald's All-American, known as "Vinsanity," practiced for the first time Thursday, slowed by tendinitis in his knee.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The monthly Wine Walk at the Art Walk on Flagler Avenue is Saturday with the theme of "Christmas Village."

Enjoy fine wines on display by local merchants and do some Christmas shopping at the same time. The Art Walk is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Wine Walk kicks in at 1 p.m. and continues to 7 p.m.

The weather is expected to be sunny with seasonable temperatures of 76 degrees.
