CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC: Sunshine State tops U.S. with most infections in past 24 hours

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The coronavius pandemic has reached new heights with worldwide infections now topping 8 million.

Florida topped the 50 states in new COVID-19 infections over the past 24 hours with 1,758, bringing the total to 77,326 testing positive for the coronavirus.

Florida is ranked eighth among the states in COVID-19 infection cases. New York has the most coronavirus infections - a whopping 405,478.

The Empire State also is first in deaths with 30,943. Florida is eighth with 2,941 deaths.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at a press conference on Friday, said he's not overly worried about Florida's spike in COVID-19 cases, saying the stats are skewed with more people in the age range of 25-45 getting tested for the highly-contagious coronavirus and showing positive, many of them not even showing symptoms and therefore less likely to get seriously ill or die.

"These are the people who are in the low-risk groups,'' the governor said.

Among new deaths reported Monday in the Sunshine State was a 91-year-old woman from Volusia County, bringing the county total to 48, two ahead of Orange County with 46. Seminole County has 13 deaths. Volusia County is 9th highest in COVID-19 deaths in Florida. Orange County is 10th. Seminole County is a distant 26th. 

Miami-Dade tops Florida's 67 counties with 826 coronavirus fatalities. That is more than the combined deaths in the second and third highest, Broward (358) and Palm Beach (428) counties, respectively.

Floridida's deadliest day for coronavirus is May 4 with 59 fatalities, according to the Florida Department of Health. 

Nationwide, there are nearly 2.1 million cases with 118,199 deaths. Globally, the number of infected is closing in on 8 million with 118,199 deaths.
