Volusia County Beach Safety: Boy, 11, bitten on foot by shark in waist-deep water in vicinity of Daytona-New Smyrna; treated on scene

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - An 11-year-old Lake Wales boy was standing in waist deep water when he was bit on the foot by a shark Thursday afternoon, which was not seen, an official with Volusia County Beach Safety said Thursday night.

"His injuries are non-life-threatening and he was not transported to the hospital by ambulance," Beach Safety Capt. Tamra Malphurs said in an email media alert to Headline Surfer on Thursday night, adding this was the third shark bite along ithe Atlantic shoreline in Volusia County so far this year.

The boy was treated on the beach and did not require transport to a hospital ER, she said.

Neither the child's name nor the specific location was released in the media alert. Headline Surfer emailed Malphurs this morning in hopes of receiving additional information. In previous incidents almnost without exception, Beach Safety has at least provcided the city and nearest ramp or landmark where such a bite occurred.
