Mayoral and commissioner candidates square off in final debate tonight at Brannon Center

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Tonight is your night to be heard and to grill the candidates for city commissioner and mayor on the important issues. It's the third and final candidates debate in advance of Early Voting and it gets under way at 6:30 p.m. The doors open at the Brannon Center at 6 p.m., on Riverside Drive.

The Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce invited the candidates in the Nov. 3 New Smyrna Beach municipal elections to speak at a 7:30 a.m.Thursday breakfast at the Smyrna Yacht Club attended by about 50 people. Mayoral candidate Adam Barringer told the gathering he pledged to have an economic plan developed for the entire city of New Smyrna Beach within the first 100 days, if elected. Kayakers lost in Cape Canaveral Seashore guided to shore in Edgewater by Sheriff's helicopter

EDGEWATER -- A Volusia County Sheriff's helicopter guided two lost kayakers to Edgewater with its spotlight after they reported they were lost in Cape Canaveral Seashore earlier tonight, the Coast Guard said.

Brush fire in Pioneer Trail woods this afternon brought under control

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The big plume of black smoke over the Causeway bridges this afternoon is from a brush fire in the 2800 block of Pioneer Trail that consumed about 10 acres of woods, but was no immediate threat to homes. The fire was brought under control by 5:30 p.m.

New Smyrna Beach Fire Department crews responded to the 1:45 p.m. blaze, which sent up a huge dark cloud that could be seen for miles.

18-year-old arrested on charges of grand theft auto and attempted burglary of gas/convenience store

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- An 18-year-old man was arrested earlier today on attempted burglary and grand theft charges after allegedly trying to break into the BP Express Mart on Sugar Mill Drive by going through the roof, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Edgewater fisherman, 56, falls overboard 19-foot boat and drowns

Courtesy photo. The body of Harvey Andrew Beltz, 56, of Edgewater, was recovered in the UIntracoastal Waterway early this morning, the victim of a drowning having apparently fallen overboard just north of the South Causeway.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A fisheran's body was recovered this morning in the Intracoastal Waterway about a quarter mile north of the South Causeway Bridge where his 19-foot motorboat was spotted with full fishing gear at daybreak, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission confirmed.
