Observer newspaper Editor Robert Burns reflects on unusual night with skateboard roof stunt

Observer newspaper Editor Robert Burns wrote in his weekly column this week about an incident that occurred on the roof of his office that landed a New Smyrna Beach man in the hospital in critical condition. See the story already posted on our Web site regarding the circumstances that led to 32-year-old Adrian Fair, falling off the roof Tuesday night and having to be airlifted with critical head injuries while playing on the roof with a skateboard. Financial adviser to discuss retirement planning June 25 at NSB library

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The “Your Library/Your Lifeline” series continues at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library with a free retirement planning workshop.

Financial adviser Jamie Calkins, who specializes in developing strategies to meet financial goals, will present the workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 25.

The series will continue in July with a display on estate planning.

Roommate charged with dumping body at landfill

DAYTONA BEACH -- Deathly ill from the effects of AIDS and hepatitis, friends and neighbors weren't surprised to learn of Michael Bobo's death on May 19, A Volusia Sheriff's spokesman said.

However, how the 52-year-old's body ended up at a Daytona Beach landfill amidst a pile of discarded recyclables remained a mystery. This week, Sheriff's investigators solved the mystery with the arrest of Bobo's former roommate and lover, 27-year-old Donald Richert, agency spokesman Gary Davidson said this afternoon.

Man robs Deltona supermarket pharmacy of painkiller pills

DELTONA -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating an early morning robbery of a Deltona grocery store pharmacy.

A man walked into the business and demanded that the pharmacist give him some drugs. The suspect implied he had a weapon, but one was not actually seen, Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said. No one was injured during the incident. The robber was able to grab a few bottles of prescription pills and then flee. Several deputies, a K-9 unit and a Sheriff's Office helicopter responded to the scene, but the suspect was not found.

William Alva Hughes, 61, of Edgewater, a machine shop supervisor for Microflex in Ormond Beach for 27 years, who enjoyed woodworking, collecting guns and knives, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009.

SBA business loans available for flooding victims

HOLLY HILL -- The U.S. Small Business Administration has opened a Business Recovery Center to help businesses affected by the recent storms and flooding. Businesses and nonprofits of any size can borrow up to $2 million for physical losses. The SBA also offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working-capital needs. Interest rates are as low as 4 percent for businesses, with terms up to 30 years. The Business Recovery Center is in the Holly Hill Community Recreational Center, 1046 Daytona Ave., Holly Hill, and is open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Nancy Jo Wood, 72, of New Smyrna Beach, who co-owned Beachside Photo in New Smyrna Beach with her late husband was a member of Coronado Community United Methodist Church and former member of Smyrna Yacht Club, died Friday, June 12.

Kathy May Flynn, 60, of Edgewater, who enjoyed collecting coins and was active in the VFW and American Legion Post 285 in Edgewater, died Thursday, June 11, 2009.
