Gov. Scott honors 137 veterans with service awards at Emory L. Bennett facility in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH -- Gov. Rick Scott, joined by Brigadier General James O. Eifert and retired Army Colonel Mike Prendergast, awarded 137 Florida veterans with the Governor’s Veterans Service Award for their service to Florida and the nation.

“The freedoms and opportunities that all Americans enjoy are a result of the service of our brave veterans, Scott said during the ceremony at the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Daytona Beach, one of six veterans’ nursing homes in the state. "This medal serves as a testament of thanks from Floridians everywhere.”

During the Tuesday ceremony, Governor Scott highlighted the service of one Florida veteran in particular, Lt Richard Oly:

DAYTONA BEACH -- The newest jurist in the 7th Judicial Circuit started on the bench this week, presiding over family law cases at the Volusia County Courthouse.

Dawn Nichols was appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Hubert L. Grimes.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Running on only one hour of sleep, now two-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt, Jr. embarked on his week-long whirlwind media tour Monday morning after installing his No. 88 National Guard Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet inside the Daytona International Speedway Ticket and Tours Building.

Junior Johnson wins 1960 Daytona 500 / Headline Surfer®

DAYTONA BEACH -- Fireball Roberts was the early leader of the 1960 Daytona 500 run on Feb. 14, but he would end up out of the race with engine problems and Junior Johnson took over and won the crash-marred affair.

He started ninth and was at home in North Carolina until a week earlier when he was convinced by Masoni to race. Masoni even supplied him with a car, a 1959 Chevrolet, sponsored by the Daytona Kennel.
