ORANGE CITY -- A Volusia County deputy was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center after his cruiser was struck by another motorist just before 6 this morning on Graves Avenue and an hour later, a motorist was killed in yet another accident on Ohio Avenue, according to initial reports from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The deputy was northbound on 17-92 when a southbound car turning left on Graves Avenue struck his driver's-side door. His injuries are not considered life threatening, but he was airlefted by the Sheriff's Air-One helicopter just to be on the safe side. The deputy's name wasn't immediately available.

TALLAHASSEE -- Governor Rick Scott signed today Executive Order 11-63, creating the Commission on Review of Taxpayer Funded Hospital Districts, which will consider whether government-run hospitals are in the best interest of taxpayers and recommend a cost-effective and efficient model for providing Florida with a health-care safety net.

ORANGE CITY -- “A Good Old Fashioned Christmas” will be held Saturday, as the city esarlier in the day hosts its annual Christmas Village.

The Christmas Village will begin the day at 9 a.m. and last until 8 p.m., in Dickinson Park, on the corner of 17/92 and East Graves Avenue. The community is invited to browse booths selling handmade gifts and Christmas crafts. Anyone interested in obtaining a booth space—which costs $25 for each 10x10 spot—can go on Orange City’s website to fill out an application. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.

ORANGE CITY -- It’s time to get in the swing of things with Volusia County’s adult winter softball league. Games will be played at Pfc. Emory L. Bennett Veterans Memorial Park, beginning Dec. 13.

The fee for this league, which consists of 10 - 12 games, is $425. Coed teams will play Monday nights, and men’s teams will play Tuesday and Thursday nights. The league will follow ISA rules with various modifications.
