DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Orange City Mayor Tom Laputka's run for Volusia County's top elected office came to a less than stellar conclusion when the final votes were tallied in the Aug. 30 primary. Laputka finished dead last among the five candidates.

Congressional candidate will be joined at an 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, press conference at the Dickinson Center, 120 E. Graves Ave, Orange City by Orange City Mayor Tom Laputka, Deltona Mayor Masiarczyk,  Lake Helen Mayor Buddy Snowden and DeLand Mayor Bob Apgar.

ORANGE CITY, FL – Adam Barringer, conservative Republican candidate for the 6th Congressional District from New Smyrna Beach, has been endorsed by 11 Volusia County mayors. Four of them from West Volusia will join him at a press conference planned for 11:30 a.m. Monday. The public is invited and welcomed to ask questions.

The press conference will be held at the Dickinson Park gazebo, 120 E. Graves Ave., Orange City. Joining the former New Smyrna Beach mayor in his quest for Congress will be a group of mayors from West Volusia who have endorsed him. They include Orange City Mayor Tom Laputka; DeLand Mayor Robert Apgar; Deltona Mayor John Masiarczyk: and Lake Helen Mayor Buddy Snowden.

ORANGE CITY -- The scuba diver who died in an apparent diving accident this afternoon at Blue Springs State Park has been identified as 36-year-old Samuel Slack of Edgewater, a Volusia County Sheriff's official said.

Slack was prnounced dead at 3::43 p.m. at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City. The Sheriff's Office was called at 2:52 p.m. in responding to the fatality, agency spokesman Brandon Haught said.

"(Slack) was transported to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City where he was pronounced dead," Haught told Headline Surfer.

ORANGE CITY -- A man died this afternoon after an apparent scuba diving accident at Blue Springs State Park, a Volusia County Sheriff's official said.

The Sheriff's Office was called at 2:52 p.m. after the fatality.

"The man was transported to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City where he was pronounced dead," Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught told Headline Surfer. "Meanwhile, his diving partner was transported to Florida Hospital Orlando for treatment. The Sheriff's Office will be investigating the death as is standard procedure but no foul play is suspected. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin."

Taxicab carjacked in Orange City / Headline SurferHeadline Surfer graphic / An alert cab driver used a little trickery on Sunday to escape from a gun-toting customers, but had his taxi stolen at the intersection of Volusia and Graves avenues in Orange City 8 a.m. Sunday as shown at left.

ORANGE CITY -- A taxi driver was held up at gunpoint early this morning and ordered to drive a man and woman to Orange city before he escaped at the intersection of Volusia and Graves avenues, A Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman said.

The 2002 Dodge Caravan was later recovered abandoned in Sanford and the duo remain at large.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The National Weather Service has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for the Volusia County cities of New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange, Orange City, Lake Helen and Deltona until 9 p.m.

The advisory was issued at 6:58 p.m. from the National Weather Service in Melboune, following a fast-moving thunderstorm.
