Sheriff's Office: DeLand woman charged with child neglect after leaving 4-year-old daughter alone to search for crack

DELAND -- A DeLand woman was arrested Saturday morning by Volusia County Sheriff's deputies for leaving a 4-year-old girl home alone while the defendant reportedly went off on a crack cocaine binge.

Patricia Reynolds, 39, is facing charges of child neglect, prisoner escape and resisting an officer with violence.

The Sheriff's Office was contacted at about 7:10 a.m. by a woman who said that a 4-year-old girl showed up on her doorstep at about 5:45 a.m.

Rip currents blamed for drowning in Ormond Beach surf; rip warnings issued countywide for today

ORMOND BEACH -- Rip currents were blamed for a 55-year-old tourist's drowning Saturday, the Volusia County Beach Patrol said.

Philip Standley, 55, of Noblesville, Ind., was swimming in waist-deep water with his brother when they got caught in a rip current, Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said of the 3 p.m. incident near the Granada Avenue Approach.

DeLand motorcyclist killed in overnight hit and run on State Road 17

DeLAND - A 46-year-old DeLand motorcyclist was killed on Ste Road 17 just north of DeLand early this morning after he pulled in front of a pick-up truck and struck in the rear of the bike before he was then fatally run over by a second vehicle that didn't stop, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Here are two of four anonymous e-mails sent out to voters by a supporter of first-term Mayor Sally Mackay in the past couple of weeks under the heading of "NSB new times," all of which attack the candidacy of mayoral candidate Adam Barringer, who won the primary and received all four available public endorsements in the 2009 campaign. Mackay denied any involvement in the e-mail campaign, but added they have merit and are actually humorous.

Hollywood legend Johnny Duncan to appear at Athens Theatre event; Edgewater's Charlie Carlson to emcee

DELAND -- Blue Heron International Pictures and The Athens Theatre announced today that PBS television celebrity Charlie Carlson will emcee "A Night With Johnny Duncan."

Duncan, a Hollywood legend, will appear live on stage at the historic Athens Theatre 7p.m. Friday, Nov. 13. The Box Office opens at 6.
