Hukill to Congress: Balance the federal budget

TALLAHASSEE - State Rep. Dorothy Hukill (R-Port Orange) saw adoption in the Florida House of a measure urging Congress to reign in out-of-control spending and runaway deficits by balancing the federal budget. House Memorial (HM) 1583 was adopted by the House with 79 co-sponsors. The measure's sponsor, Rep. Hukill, issued the flowing statement:

"At a time when we see our children's and grandchildren's future washing away in a sea of red ink, it is time to tell Washington to stop spending our money irresponsibly.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Sure, the theme of the 2010 Relay for Life was "Rock the Cure." But it was really about the vitality of the community. Jason McGuirk, 37, knows a lot about community. He owns the Dairy Queen on U.S. 1 and is a member of the New Smyrna Beach Planning Board. He and his wife, Jess, 29, big-time supporters of the event, were on hand Friday with their two children, Truman, 18 months old, and Isla, 4 months old.

I was reminded today of that movie The Gods Must be Crazy, where African bushmen are enthralled by a glass Coke bottle thrown from a plane in the sky.

My little boat is along the flight path into Heathrow, and for the past 6 days the volcano-enforced silence has been a marvel. So this morning, as I was talking on the phone with Wendy, pondering whether we will get on our flight to Florida Friday.

'Jammin' in the Park' is music to the ears

EDGEWATER -- The New Smyrna Beach High School marching band held its "Jammin’ in the Park" fundraiser on Saturday, April 17, at Hawks Park to raise money for new uniforms. About $3,000 was raied during this event, with the ultimate goal of $30,000 to replace uniforms that have been handed down, patched and re-sewed for 18 years.
