DELTONA -- Volusia County Sheriff's investigators arrested a Deltona man this afternoon after he was accused of following a 14-year-old girl and propositioning her for sex.

Daytona State College is in a world of hurt over $1.5 million taxpayer dollars used to pay the bills the Community Cultural Foundation incurred last summer when planned concerts failed to generate either public interest or money from ticket sales. Mayor Glen Ritchey's plan to bring back the LSO as a remedy is nothing short of a delusion.

Volusia Sheriff: Deltona man arrested after foiled Burger King robbery

DELTONA -- A failed attempt to steal money early Saturday morning from the cash drawer of a Burger King in Deltona has landed a 42-year-old man in jail.

The attempted robbery was foiled by an employee who shoved the man’s hands away from the drawer and slammed it shut before the suspect could swipe the money. The accused, Christopher Sponer of Deltona, is facing charges of robbery by sudden snatching, grand theft of a motor vehicle and battery.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 49-year-old surfer from Deltona is the first shark-bite victim of 2011, even if his puncture wounds are small, the Volusia County Beach Patrol said of the Friday incident while he was standing in 3 feet of water.

Ronald White refused transport to Bert Fish Medical Center following the 3:30 p.m. bite while he was returning to shore near the Beachway Avenue Approach.

The shame: Scott voted in governor to run state like a corporation, even if cuts hurt wrong people

The residents of the state of Florida apparently liked it when Rick Scott said he’d run this state like a corporation since they voted him in as governor in November. Now that he is doing just that everyone is up in arms as he cuts social services, blocks the building of Sunrail and so much more.

Gov. Scott is right: High-speed rail is a bad idea for Florida

Gov. Rick Scott did the right thing in vetoing receipt of government funds for high-speed rail. There are several good reasons why this was a wise idea.

The light rail would have cost many times the amount offered by the federal government. Light rail would do almost nothing to relieve the congestion on our roads. There are several much more cost effective ways to attack our congestion problems. Light rail would do little or nothing to reduce pollution, and use of oil.

In fact, light rail will produce virtually none of the benefits claimed by its advocates.        

Florida Highway Patrol: DeLand woman, 53, killed after crashing into cement mixer truck

DELAND -- A 53-year-old DeLand motorist was killed Friday when she drove her brand new Nissan into the path of a cement mixer on U.S. 92 at Old Daytona Road near DeLand, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Patricia Poeth, who was trapped in her crushed car, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8 a.m. accident, the highway patrol said.
