Oak Hill City Commissioner Ron Engele

Videos and photos by Sera Frederick / Oak Hill Commissioner Ron Engele did not show up at the last meeting during which the mayor apologized for his behavior at the April 25 meeting when he had two people thrown out of the meeting hall and went on a rant.

OAK HILL -- Mayor Mary Lee Cook has apologized to Henry Frederick, editor/publisher and founder of NSBNews.net for the illegal actions of Commissioner Ron Engele in having him removed from the previous meeting, adding all of the commissioners, including herself are "guilty" for having allowed it to happen in the first place.

Demise of Osama bin Laden a great victory, but key domestic problems need to be tackled

The takedown and killing of Osama bin Laden gives us a moment to rejoice that such a rotten so-and-so got what he deserved. Certainly, a lot of praise is deserved by the Navy Seals, the intelligence community, and yes, even President Obama, who made the right calls in getting the job done.

However, the killing of one man has done very little to alter the fact that our other main problems are still staring us in the face: The threat of increased taxation, a crushing debt, heavy inflation, high unemployment, a weakening of our defense posture and deterioration of the rule of law.

Drama a big part of high school learning experience and a lot of fun

Earlier this month, New Smyrna Beach High School put on its annual Student Directed One Act Plays. I had the opportunity to participate in playing a fairly large role with a monologue. This year three seniors who took drama all four years were able to direct three very different plays.

Continuing upgrades to make for even better surfing experience

We'll have a lot of fresh stories over the weekend as well as some that have been delayed because of the time needed to upgrade coding and other issues related to providing a greater surfing experience for our devoted readers and those new to NSBNews.net. We'll have the latest on where the weekly Observer is running its operations (hint: an Edgewater home) and the big apology from The Oak Hill mayor to your's truly regarding the boorish and illegal behavior by Commissioner Ron Engele, who was a no-show at the meeting.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office: 7-Eleven clerk foils robbery attempt

DAYTONA BEACH -- An alert clerk at the 7-Eleven at 1200 Flomich St., foiled a masked robber early this morning by running from the counter and into the back of the store as he was coming in and when the robber didn't see anyone he quickly took off, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

"No weapon was seen or implied," Sheriff's spokesman Gary Haught said of the 2:34 a.m. Saturday robbery attempt at the 24-hour convenience store, just outside the city limits. "This is the second time the store was targeted. A man had robbed it Monday morning and got away with some cash."

Even the best of intentions don't always have desired results

Sometimes the best intentions can have the worst results. This was the case with a person paid in advance as a contributing reporter who used Facebook as a spiteful forum when he couldn't get his way. Even though this person portrayed me as a terrible person and attempted to put NSBNews.net in a negative light, I'm not going to name him because he's not important enough. But I do want to set the record straight for those who might have come across his whiny postings.

Word on the Street

Question: Now that Osama bin Laden is history, what is the next big priority (or priorities) for President Obama?

Karen Kershaw"We have an educational crisis. It has to start with supporting families and getting the childen early. We've lost so many of the head start programs."

Richard Penland"Bringing home our troops from Afghanistan. And our economy. We need to create jobs at home instead of on foreign soil. We can't have jobs if they are being created overseas in China, Korea, Mexico or Pakistan."

Richard Penland, 72, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and a seasonal New Smyrna Beach resident

True Story

Henry was NSBNews.net editor/publisher Henry Frederick's favorite newspaper comic strip when he was a small child in the 1960s, which inspired him early on in life to seek a career in journalism. However, he wasn't named after the comic strip character. Henry's father is Henry Frederick Jr. and his late grandfather was Henry Frederick Sr., who carried a press card, though young Henry didn't know this until after he graduated from college and began his career. And Henry has a 17-year-old son, Henry IV, who enjoys computers and electronics, but so far has shown no interest in journalism.
