NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A citizen implored the City Commission to reconsider the lay-off of the city emergency management coordinator whose position was eliminated last month as part of a $1 million cut in the 2009 budget that took effect Oct. 1.

That citizen, Kathy Wright, spoke of the firing of Randy Wright.

"A new fire station was built with tax dollars, to include an operational emergency operations center and the city then staffed with a position, euipped the EOC and paid for training for their EOC coordinator.

Daytona Beach Ocean Center to host NCAA men's regular season basketball tournament

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Ocean Center willone again play host for an NCAA men's opening season basketball tournament Nov. 21-23.

Teams from Marshall University, Morgan State University, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, University of Utah, University of Mississippi and Rollins College will compete in the second annual three-day Glenn Wilkes Classic for the 2008-'09 season. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, Nov. 21
2 p.m. Marshall University vs. Morgan State University
4:15 p.m. Rollins College vs. University of Wisconsin-Green Bay

Campaign encourages 4-wheeled motorists, bikers to stay safe on the local roads during Biketoberfest motorcycle rally

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- With tens of thousands of bikers expected to roar into town Thursday for Biketoberfest, a local task force is launching a public information campaign to make the roads safer for motorcyclists and locals, said Volusia County spokeswoman Pat Kuehn.

Taxing the rich more does not help the middle class

The present presidential campaign keeps bringing up the question of whether the rich are paying their fair share of the taxes in this country. In New Smyrna the view appears mixed. For example, when I asked lawyer Judson Wood this question, he replied, “They are probably paying too much.” Bill Daniels, 70, answered, ”The rich should have to pay a higher marginal rate.” Amanda Lee Fike at Ruthie’s Restaurant responded, “I don’t think they pay enough; they get away with a lot.”

Biketoberfest on U.S. 1: Born to throttle all night

Get your motor running. Head out on U.S. 1. Revving up the throttle...so you can't sleep a wink. Like a true-natured nuisance, we were born, born to throttle all night, we can make the noise so high, you just wanna die.
So the lyrics aren't quite as good as Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild," but living on U.S. 1 or Dixie Freeway is no picnic. Certainly not during Biketoberfest. I bought the Long-vacant little brown house nobody else seemed to want on North Dixie Freeway (U.S. 1) last spring because it's in a commercial zone (B3) and a great location for my work, even if the yard is too small and the house is really old.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Barack Obama and John McCain could learn a thing or two about money from 14-year Logan Colee. After all, he's going to be in the nation's capital when one of the presidential hopefuls is sworn into office in January. The New Smyrna Beach High School freshman was succinct and clear in his mission Tuesday when he addressed the New Smyrna Beach City Commission to seek funds to help supplement his trip.
