DELTONA -- It is a brand New Year; an opportunity for reflection and renewal. It was my honor to serve as your Vice Chair of the Volusia County Council this past year. And what a year it was; we adopted a budget with a reduction in dollars while consolidating public safety communications around the county and bringing our ambulance service, EVAC, in house.

PORT ORANGE -- 2012 is now upon us. This coming year will bring many challenges, and we as a people will face many choices to determine which way we want to move forward. Our economic situation remains uncertain.

We have all worked together to get things back on track, but we haven’t yet returned to where we want to be. Many are still hurting. But the New Year will also produce new opportunities. Various signs point to a budding recovery, and many Americans are now doing better today than they were just one year ago.

2012 and keeping the politicians honest

NSBNews.net wishes everyone a happy and prosperous 2012 as we continue our mission of reporting the news with a priority on New Smyrna Beach where we remain the lone media outlet providing 24/7 news coverage.

For the record, we stand alone. We are not affiliated with any other websites, news or not, period. Our mission is to hold local government accountable to the public, that means, New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill on the municipal level and Volusia County government. To a lesser extent, we'll deal with Volusia County's other cities as well.

Plus, we're expanding our coverage to include breaking news anywhere and everywhere in the Sunshine State when we can get our hands on it.

Brain myths: Real and imagined

Myth No. 1: We only use 10 percent of our brain.

Here's the truth: Brain imaging studies using PET scans and functional MRI show that any mentally complex activity uses many areas of the brain, and over a day, just about all of the brain gets a workout. More proof that the entire brain is crucial for daily life is the devastating impact of damage to even a small area of the brain.
