DAYTONA BEACH -- Attendance was sparse for Saturday's inaugural Red Bull Global Rallycross at Daytona International Speedway. But the spectators who dared challenge the hot Florida sun in two bleacher sections saw Rhys Millen take the checkered flag in this high-flying race on dirt and asphalt, even as his engine failed on the final lap.

Karen Foxman, a supervising director of operations and a lead prosecutor for the State Attorney's Office in Daytona Beach. She is the endorsed candidate of HeadlineSurfer.com in the race for Circuit Judge, Group 18.

DAYTONA BEACH -- If there is one adjective that clearly doesn't fit with describing Karen Foxman and her progression in a court of law, it's entitlement. Especially considering the Foxman name: Her husband, Matt Foxman is a circuit judge.

Her brother-in-law, David Foxman, is a Volusia County judge. And her father-in-law, S. James Foxman, not only is a retired circuit judge, but the Justice Center in Daytona Beach bears his name.

Married into a family of judges, you might be surprised to hear in this endorsement that, if elected, she has the potential to enhance the legacy of what it truly means to be a Foxman -- not by bloodlines or marriage, but sense of responsibility, understanding and application of the rule of law in a truly meaningful way.

DELTONA -- The maturation Rich Gailey has shown since his initial run two years ago against an entrenched incumbent has been truly amazing.

And Gailey's hard work on the campaign trail brings hope for the folks of Deltona, DeBary, Enterprise and Osteen in reversing what has been an abysmal two years under term-limited incumbent in Patricia Northey.

And this endorsement is as much about the past as it is the future. Gailey is that future and his presence on the county dais is desperately needed now.

A mailer by District 3 Volusia County Councilwoman Deb Denys claims she voted to reduce taxes two consecutive years, even though she hasn't been in office that long.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Deb Denys, elected in 2012, brags in a recent campaign mailer that she "voted against tax increases two years in a row,"  which is impossible since she hasn't even been in office long enough to even come close to completing a second annual budget cycle.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Gov. Rick Scott was more than eager to have a press release sent out to Florida's daily media outlets on Friday, the day after he visited the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce with promising tourism figures -- increasing numbers of visitors and tourism-related jobs.

"According to VISIT FLORIDA's preliminary estimates, Florida has experienced another record quarter for visitation, with 24 million visitors during the months of April-June 2014," the governor boasted.

Primary endorsements today

DAYTONA BEACH -- There is a lot of ground to cover in terms of getting our endorsements published before the Tuesday primary, which is less than 24 hours from now.

With that said, it's time to get bcd to cranking them out. In some campaigns it will be obvious from the in-depth analysis that we are well schooled while in others it might be like pulling teeth. Of the approximately 28 endorsements, there will likely be a handful where we offer only a token recommendation or perhaps none at all. Typically, that would be in some of the smaller municipalities like Lake Helen.

ENDORSEMENTS: Experienced leadership in John Penny or youthful enthusiasm in Chris via for Holly Hill mayor

HOLLY HILL --It's experience in John Penny or youth in Chris Via that appear to be the best choices for voters in choosing their next mayor in today's primary.

Penny, 50, married with two children and a veteran Holly Hill commissioner, has the pedigree and experience in municipal governance, while Via, just 24, has the youthful exuberance and enthusiasm that could reverberate throughout this small city that struggles sometimes in the shadow of its neighbor to the both in Ormond Beach or to the south in Daytona Beach.

A third option is mayoral candidate "Crazy" Eddie Colosimo, a 72-year-old Vietnam vet and biker with the self-described nickname who has been an outspoken critic of municipal politics over the last couple of years.
