NSB citizens group declares victory with city lease opinion; takes aim at election incumbents

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla – Concerned Citizens of New Smyrna Beach announced today that it had achieved the first victory in a recently launched effort to reform its local government by virtue of a legal opinion that puts in doubt a longstanding "sweetheart" lease between the city and the Angler's Club for exclusive use of 43 boat slips .

NSB's new city manager has a busy first day

She caught a breather for a few minutes outside the Administrative Office Building off the North Causeway in the early afternoon with Mayor Sally Mackay, having spent all morning meeting many of the city's 280-plus employees with stops at the main City Hall, fire stations, Public Works, Police Station and the Municipal Golf Course. Today, she gets down to business refining the new fiscal budget.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A severe thunderstorm and tornado warning from the National Weather Service proved prophetic Friday night in Port Orange with a twister destroying at least seven mobile homes there and more than a hundred others damaged while New Smyrna Beach endured thunder and lightning that caused intermittent power outages.

Sheriff's Office: Edgewater man charged with sex with minor who bears child, which he insists not include his name on birth certificate

Courtesy photo/Volusia Jail mug. Robert C. Young, 31, of Edgewater, a convicted felon recently released from prison, has been arrested on a warrant charging him with having unlawful sex with a child. The victim, bore his child at the age of 16, two years after Young allegedly began having sex with her. In a police report, the victim's mother states that Young knew he was the father of her teenage girl's baby, but he didn't want his name listed as the father on the birth certificate or for the young Oak Hill mother to obtain food stamps because he didn't want the authorities to know he had sex with a minor.

EDGEWATER -- Robert C. Young went to prison two years ago with a secret few others knew at the time.

Young's past caught up with him again Tuesday when he was arrested by Volusia County Sheriff's deputies on a warrant charging him with having unlawful sex with a minor.

The secret? The victim was 14 years old when she and Young began a sexual relationship, according to Sheriff's investigative reports and an arrest affidavit, that resulted in her bearing a child at the age of 16.
