New Smyrna Beach cops: Man arrested behind upholstery shop on burglary charges

Joseh BuczekNSB burglary localeJoseph Buczek was arrested on burglary charges early Friday related to the break-in of Coggic Upholstery, 509 S. Dixie Freeway, according to New Smyrna Beach cops.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 34-year-old man was arrested earlier today on burglary charges after an off-duty Edgewater cop caught him prowling behind businesses in the 500 block of South Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Joseph Buczek was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Volusia County branch jail, police said.

Here is a synopsis of the 6:09 a.m. incident as described by Detective Sgt. Eugene Griffith: "An Edgewater officer observed a suspicious male emerge from behind businesses in the 500 block of South Dixie Freeway."

Griffith continued, "When the officer attempted to contact the suspect, he took flight and was apprehended after a short foot chase. It was determined on scene that the male had committed at least one burglary, at Coggic Upholstery, 509 S Dixie Freeway, and possibly others in the immediate area."

DAYTONA BEACH -- Before Mike Graham has even been laid to rest, another former professional wrestler has died unexpectedly.

Sheriff's Office: 12-year-old Deltona boy reported missing

DELTONA -- A 12-year-old Deltona boy, who has a history of being a runaway has been missing since Tuesday evening, Volusia Conty Sheriff's officials said this afternoon.

Adriel Thomas had left a friend's house and was supposed to ride his bicycle three blocks back to his home. But about two hours later when Thomas had still not arrived home, his mother called the Sheriff's Office for help.

"Thomas has run away in the past, but never at night and he had never been gone for long," Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said. "His mother said that Thomas had been upset recently because she had turned off his cell phone service."

Deputies responded to the boy's home, 665 Wing Terrace, after his mother had called at about 9:26 p.m. She said that Thomas had been at a friend's house in the 1100 block of Whitewood Drive and had left there to return home on his bike at about 7 p.m.

Sheriff's Office investigating murder-suicide of elderly married couple near Ormond Beach

Spokesman: Husband suspected of pulling trigger; gun, suicide note near bodies

Murder-suicide sceneAn out-of-state relative called the Sheriff's Office after being unable to reach an elderly marrid couple on the phone, leading to Tuesday night's discovery of an apparent murder-suicide in the home at 141 E. Woodhaven Circle.

ORMOND BEACH -- The recovered bodies of a husband and wife, identified as 73-year-old James Ryals and 74-year-old Joyce Ryals, in their home near Ormond Beach are believed to victims of a murder-suicide with the husband pulling the trigger that killed his wife and then huimself, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman said of the overnight murder-suicide.

"Based on evidence at the scene, investigators believe that James Ryals killed his wife and then killed himself,"agency spokesman Gary Davidson said this morning, adding, "The Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled to begin the autopsies at 9 a.m."

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Sheriff Ben Johnson was the big winner in the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce's hob nob straw poll by a near 2-1 margin over challenger Wendell Bradford. The results were released today and posted on the chamber's Facebook page.
