Elderly DeLand man with medical needs still missing

DELTONA -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding a missing Deltona man reported missing by his family on Friday.

Alfonso Milian, 82, suffers from beginning stages of Alzheimer's Disease and takes medications for high blood pressure and diabetes.

Help abused, injured animals through Volusia County's animal welfare fund

DELAND -- Volusia County Animal Control is working to address the animal overpopulation issue through proactive measures – such as education, investigation, and enforcement – to stop indiscriminant breeding of dogs and cats, animal fighting, and cruelty to animals.

As a result, the county has organized an Animal Welfare Fund, to which citizens can make donations, said Shelley Szafraniec, a Vousia County spokeswoman. The funds are used to offset the expenses of these efforts, she said.

Elderly DeLand woman missing since Thursday found in woods

DELAND -- Marjorie Reynolds, a 75-year-old DeLand resident reported missing three days ago by a family member, was found this afternoon, conscious and alert, but dehydrated in a wooded area near the 1700-block of Marsh Road between Old Dayton Road and Highway 92.

She was located at 1:45 p.m., Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

As many as 200 people helped in the search for the missing woman, he said, including personnel from the Orange City Fire Department.

NSB man dies in mobile-home fire

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 68-year-old resident of the Redlands senior mobile-home park off U.S. 1, died Saturday in a blaze that fully engulfed his residence, officials said.

Robert Schaedel died in the 3:11 p.m. fire, but his wife, Mildred, who escaped the flames after trying to fight the fire, was treated at the scene for minor unspecified injuries.

OSTEEN -- State Road 415 has been a popular scenic route and an alternative for daytriipers heading east to New Smyrna Beach from Sanford, but it has also proven deadly as witnessed by Friday's head-on collision near Osteen where two motorists were burned beyond recognition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Volusia/Flagler unemployment rate up over previous month while national jobless rate dips slightly

DAYTONA BEACH -- Are we going to climb out of this recession anytime soon? Not anytime soon, judging by local and national unemployment figures.

Though the national jobless rate dipped slightly from 9.4 percent in July from the 9.4 percent in June, according to Department of Labor Statistics reported by CNN with 247,000 net jobs lost, locally in Volusia and Flagler counties, July's jobless rate was 11.7 percent. That's almost double June's 6.8 percent and closer to May's 11.7 percent, according to Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation.
