Banks in DeLand and Port Orange robbed; authorities unsure if they are connected (see surveillance photo)

Courtesy photo/DeLand police. A photo of a bank robber was taken from surveillance footage at the Space Coast Credit Union branch in DeLand, which was robbed Friday. A Wachovia Bank branch in Port Orange was also robbed later in the day, but authorities aren't certain if the two are related.

 

Father Francis Browne of Sacred Heart R.C. Church in NSB dies

NEW SMYRNA BEACH – Father Francis Browne's love of the priesthood was unquestioned as was his favorite hobby: Fishing.

As first reported by The Observer newspaper, Browne, pastor of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in New Smyrna Beach since 2003, suffered a massive heart attack Thursday that resulted in his death while fishing with a friend, Paul Arnold of Edgewater, in Mosquito Lagoon near the Canaveral National Seashore when he was stricken in the boat. Browne was 66.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A Mass of the Resurrection for Rev. Francis J. Browne, C.Ss.R., 66, who died Thursday, June 18, 2009 will be concelebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Sacred Heart R.C. Church.

A Christian Wake service will be 7 p.m. Monday, at Sacred Heart. Burial will be Saturday,  in Mt. St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Esopus, N.Y.

Happy Father's Day

Today is Father's Day. And from this father to all of you out there, have a Happy Father's Day. This was a surprising Father's Day for me. My son, Henry IV, baked me a cake. He gave it to me with a card in which he wrote: "Hope you liked the cake. I made it all by myself."

Nesting loggerhead disappears in Ponce Inlet

PONCE INLET -- Volusia County’s Environmental Management Division is asking the public to help find a nesting loggerhead turtle that disappeared from the beach in Ponce Inlet early Monday morning.

According to sea turtle specialist Jennifer Winters, a loggerhead turtle crawled onto the beach to nest near the Beach Street ramp, possibly after low tide at 2:30 a.m. The turtle’s tracks went up the ramp west of the gates and ended at the pavement.

Celebrate July 4 at historic DeBary Hall

DEBARY -- The public is invited to enjoy an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration at DeBary Hall Historic Site from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, July 4.

Activities at this free outdoor party are geared toward all ages. A disc jockey will play patriotic music, and attendees can compete in a number of events, including pie-eating contests. Participants may bring a picnic lunch or purchase refreshments on site.

Mexican drug dealer living in Volusia County gets 10 years in prison

DELAND -- A 47-year-old Mexican citizen living in Volusia County, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a marijuana trafficking operation in Central Florida that was busted in October 2007, the Florida Attorney General's Office has announced.

Heriberto Banuelos Jimenez, 47, pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy to traffic in 25 pounds or more of marijuana, according to Sandi Copes, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General's office, in announcing the sentence Friday.
