NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Today is the final day to register to vote in the Sept. 22 primary races for mayor and two city commission seats, according to the Volusia County Board of Elections.

City residents who are not registered may do so by going to the Department of Motor Vehicles (in the K-mart plaza on State Road 44), the New Smyrna Beach Public Library (1001 S. Dixie Freeway) or at the Volusia County Board of Elections Office in DeLand (125 W. New York Ave., DeLand). DAYTONA BEACH -- One man died, a woman was on life support and her twin sister critically injured after a 2000 Ford sport utility vehicle flipped several times on Nova Road near George Engram Boulevard after travelling at a high rate of speed early Saturday, police said.

Police were not certain who was behind the wheel of the SUV in the 2:15 a.m. crash because three of the occupants were ejected.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Dozens of volunteers showed up this sunny Saturday morning and into the early afternoon to pick up their share of lawn signs, buttons and placards for the re-election campaign of first-term Mayor Sally Mackay, who opened up her headquarters on Canal Street at the former bureau offices of the Daytona Beach News-Journal/Pennysaver.

DAYTONA BEACH -- A 26-year-old Palm Coast man was arrested after firing a gun into the ground outside a nightclub earlier today, which prompted a Daytona Beach police oggicer to fire several warning shots in the air, police said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 54-year-old man died after washing ashore unconscious this afternoon between Flounder and Drum avenues, the Volusia County Beach Patrol said.

The swimmer, whose indentity was not released because relatives had not yet been contacted was given CPR by lifeguards who spotted him on the beach just after 3 p.m. He was rushed by EVAC ambulance to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach where he was pronounced dead, said Capt. Scott Petersohn, spokesman for the Beach Patrol.

ORMOND BEACH -- Burglars took a safe containing $2,000 in cash from Cici's Pizza on West Granada Avenue by breaking through drywall and cement, Ormond Beach police said Friday.

The burglary occurred sometime after closing on Monday night and before opening on Tuesday, police said, noting access was gained through an empty room next to the pizzeria from the rear.

Police said they do not believe the theft was an inside job, but rather a continuation of a rash of burglaries in the area.

DEBARY -- The First Presbyterian Church was destroyed by fire Thursday night with hot spots still flaring Friday morning, a Volusia County spokeswoman said later in the day Friday.

Personnel from Volusia County Fire Services, Orange City Fire Department, DeLand Fire Department and Deltona Fire Rescue responded at approximately 9:40 p.m. Thursday to the report of a fire at First Presbyterian Church, 267 E. Highbanks Road, DeBary, The church was fully involved when crews arrived on scene, said Vickie Pleus, a Volusia County spokeswoman.

DEBARY -- The DeBary Hall Historic Site is displaying a “Women through History” exhibit through Sept. 11.

The museum-quality exhibit, which went on display Aug. 21, was created by two Port Orange girl scouts who are working to earn the Girl
Scout Gold Award, the highest international award in scouting.

The teens, Cheyenne Conrad and Heather Larson, are members of Girl Scout Troop 450 and are juniors at Spruce Creek High School.

DELAND -- A multi-agency crime suppression operation targeting gang activity and street crimes such as robbery, burglary, drugs and auto theft swept through West Volusia Friday night, resulting in 41 arrests and 90 traffic citations, said a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman.

The arrests included eight for felony offenses and 33 for misdemeanors.
